Positive and Negative Images of America

This images represents my negative view of America. It shows members of Westboro Baptist Church protesting the 2009 Oscars. The group is an independent baptist church largely made up of members of the Phelps family. WBC are an extremist Christian group who strongly oppose homosexuality and believe all the problems in the world are somehow caused by homosexuals. Everyday they protest in around 6 different locations and also picket the funerals of homosexuals. They are also against the Jewish community and have held protests at Holocaust memorials. Other religions that the church have problems with include Catholicism, Protestantism, Islam and Hinduism. Many law suits have been held against the Phelps family and the dislike for the family can be seen in the Loius Theroux documentary "The Most Hated Family In America".

This picture of Barack Obama is my positive image because of the hope he gave to America during the election. Because of his skin colour his running for presidency got a lot more people interested and involved in the election process than there may have been. His pose in the image shows him looking into the distance as if he is looking to the future, which in itself is very positive and the large lettering of the word "progress" makes the image seem very powerful.
