My positive and negative perceptions of America.

The first picture that I have chosen is a view of Las Vegas. I would personally portray this as a negative view of America as it is specifically thought of as the gambling capital of America due to its lustrous affair with Casinos that provides a strong pulling power to many millions of tourists and veteran gamblers every year. You could say that Vegas has made its own economy through exploiting the gullibility of people, which is displayed in its enormity and extravagance as can be seen in this picture. The neon sign displayed in the background says “The City of Entertainment.” Not only is Vegas infamous for its casinos, but for its controversial weddings that are still frequently popular to both ordinary citizens and celebrities alike. We can also see that there are smaller scale versions of The Statue of Liberty and The Eiffel Tower. This for me seems that Las Vegas is making a statement that this part of America has brought all of the iconic symbols of the world together as if to say that America has it all.

This picture features student volunteers working with Habitat for Humanity to help rebuild homes in New Orleans following the devastation of hurricane Katrina. And In contrast to the previous picture, I think that this is a very positive representation of how a community of volunteers has pulled together to aid those in need. I believe that this shows that through the hardships endured and the extreme conditions that were faced following the aftermath of Katrina, many American people felt obliged to help rebuild the lives of those directly affected and regain some form of the lives that they had once had. It is this strong determination to overcome that sparks this image as a very positive portrait of America.
