The names for each of the new states were "chosen to represent a physical of cultural aspect of each new territory." This would again cause opposition because the names wouldn't necessarily represent the present day culture of the state, the people living there may also feel like they are losing part of their identity by having it changed.
This point goes for the country as a whole. Would America not feel like they are no longer the same as they were before. Would the different states that have had to merge together be able to live together peacefully or would there be cultural/religious differences.
One of the questions raised by someone commenting on the original post was "Since Hawaii's borders don't change, why does it have to get a new name?" Is that question alone already evidence that there would be a lot of anger from the people? I think if they didn't change the name of every state there would be far more problems.
Then there are also lesser issues (although probably not to the citizens) like the American Football teams. Where would each of the teams be representing, would the teams have to change and then who would people support? Would it be there former or new team? Although this doesn't seem like a huge problem, it's small things like this that make up the way we live. Another smaller issue being airports and education. Having to relearn every place would be time consuming, could cause mistakes and possibly accidents in some cases where new coordinates etc have to be learnt.
Another comment I found made an interesting point regarding the problems that could occur with education. "Dearborn would have Chicago and Milwaukee but it doesn't appear to include Madison (University of Wisconsin), Champaign (University of Illinois) or West Lafayette (Purdue). So all the people from Chicago and Milwaukee would have to send their kids out of state to go to a good state school."
I would like to know how changing the United States would impact the Country and how (if) it would change our perception of them. How would changing the layout of an entire country effect the political world?
